Join us at Big Rock Ranch in Buffalo Creek (near 100 Mile House), BC for a farm tour, potluck social, and discussion on farming on leased land!

Come get inspired and learn about the incredible farming that can be done on leased land! Farmers Robin and Johan have built up a hugely productive farm in the few years they been leasing this land, and we are lucky to be able to spend the day learning on-site about their experiences building the farm and business! They focus heavily on season extension in an area that gets frost almost every month of the year, and still manage to produce vegetables weeks ahead of schedule. Inspiring!

We will tour the farm, enjoy a potluck lunch, and take a dive into the steps to building a successful farm on leased land. We will explore what farming on leased land is like and learn about how the B.C. Land Matching Program can help you find the perfect piece of land for you to build your dream farm business – or the perfect farmer for your land. One of the Program’s Land Matchers will share information and answer questions about land matching and how leasing land works. Both farmers seeking land and farmland owners thinking about leasing land are encouraged to attend – as well as anyone who loves food, farming, and getting out onto the land!

About Big Rock Ranch

100 mile house, farm job, big rock ranch

Big Rock Ranch is a 148-acre farm, a short 15 minute drive from the historic town of 100 Mile House, in Buffalo Creek BC. Here we grow many varieties of fruits and vegetables on 1 acre, raise heritage chickens for eggs and meat on pasture, care for our 2 hives of honey bees, have 3 lovely horses, 2 awesome farm dogs and a fierce little kitty. We sell our produce, eggs and meat at the South Cariboo Farmers Market, the Clearwater Farmers Market, and to local restaurants/grocery stores from Spring to Fall every year.

Big Rock Ranch is a family-run farm where sustainability and ecological practices are at its core. We believe strongly in keeping our food as close to its source as nature intended, with a large focus on animal welfare and soil health. We feel strongly about building community, our local economy and supporting it by investing locally. Here we raise heritage chickens free range rotationally on pasture, invest in the health of our soils with low till practices and lots of compost, and are focused on environmentally aware farming practices. We are not certified organic as of yet but plan to follow through on the certification process and currently use organic methods on farm.

Discussion on farming on leased land: Young Agrarians’ Okanagan Land Matcher, Tessa, will facilitate a discussion on leasing farmland in the region. Together with Robin and Johan, we will explore what the steps are to building a successful business on leased land and how the B.C. Land Matching Program delivered by Young Agrarians can support you in making your farm vision into reality! Robin and Johan are in the process of renewing their lease length to 25-30 years, to protect the investments they’ve made to build the soil and other farm infrastructure.
