Apprenticeship: Green Arrow Farm, Royston, BC

Green Arrow Farm is seeking a full-time farm apprentice from May to October.

I grow a 1-acre market garden on a 30 acre-farm in Royston, BC. I share the property with another farm business, Umbella Farm. We’re both founding members of the recently established Merville Organics Growers Co-op in Courtenay (http://mervilleorganics.ca/), a group of five organic farms working together to market our produce, fruit, chicken, eggs and wild harvested foods.

We believe co-operative growing and marketing is the future of sustainable agriculture! We supply a 60-share CSA, 3 farmers markets per week as well as local and regional restaurants. As a group of new and established farmers we have a wide range of backgrounds and skill sets, and over 30 years of combined experience in organic farming.

As an apprentice at Green Arrow Farm you’ll learn everything you need to know to start your own successful market-farming operation, e.g. crop planning, caring for seedlings, seeding, transplanting, composting, weeding, disease and pest management, harvesting, packing, managing a CSA program, selling at farmers markets, marketing to chefs and restaurants, and more. I’m also an avid seed saver so you’ll learn all about on-farm organic seed production.

I’m looking for someone with strong motivation to learn, and the willingness to take on responsibility in managing aspects of the vegetable production. The exchange is full room and board in our 4-bedroom farmhouse, as well as a stipend, for 35 hours per week. As it is a communal living situation it is important to us that all serious applicants visit the farm before making a commitment to the season.
