The 2024 Apprentices have had a busy season learning about regenerative farming, and are now wrapping up their time on their host farms. Jenn, our Manitoba Apprenticeship Coordinator, recently sat down with apprentice Eric Moser to hear about his season at Almost Urban Vegetables near Winnipeg.⁠
⁠
Almost Urban Vegetables is a market garden producing over 40 varieties of fresh seasonal vegetables and herbs for 80 families and a farmers' market. Their goal is to produce nourishing food following organic standards, with as little use of fossil fuel as possible.⁠
⁠
This season, Eric had fun building infrastructure like drip lines and mid-tunnels, and learning the growing habits of a diversity of herbs and veggies. He had applied for the Apprenticeship Program with the hopes of narrowing down his farming interests, and after a season of working with laying hens, now knows that he want to incorporate livestock into his future farm.⁠

By learning to teach, host farms will have the opportunity to watch a new farmer acquire the skills they need to get on the land and contribute to the growing movement of regenerative agriculture.⁠

Young Agrarians Apprenticeship Program host farm mentors are full-time ranchers and farmers operating regenerative agricultural operations across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.⁠
