Name?  Simon Answerth Where do you farm? Kelowna, BC What do you farm? Market garden vegetables. What type of business structure is your farm? Husband and Wife partnership. What is your land tenure? I am involved in an incubator farm program where growers are given the chance to develop their skills on a quarter acre plot with very low land costs (i.e. lease fees, irrigation, fencing) and assumed risk.  Each ‘student’ is allowed to participate for 1-3 years after which they must move on to find their own land to lease and to hopefully one day buy. 3rd Winter Okanagan Mixer a Whirlwind Day!

What an array of amazing dishes - squash and apple soup, mushroom barley risotto, devilled eggs, lentil and roasted beet salad, homemade sourdough bread, squash gratin, roast chicken & pork, and Dutch apple pie!!!

It was a remarkable day to gather and talk about our passion for stewarding the land, getting our hands dirty, and savouring the most nourishing, delectable food ever! We were thrilled to have @ 125 people in attendance throughout the day, travelling from all over the South Interior, Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland to be in Kelowna. It was exciting to see that close to half of the room were new to the Young Agrarians and, based on feedback so far, there are some clear needs in terms of supporting new entrants to agro-ecology. Hugel-what? This autumn, the midwives in Kelowna decided to replace their two front lawns with annual and perennial food plants, as well as medicinal herbs.  I said “hugelkultur!” And they said “what?” Hugelkultur is a German word meaning “hill culture”.  It is a raised garden bed that can be created by placing large pieces of wood into a shallow trench and then layering upside-down turf and soil on top.
