AUG 14: KELOWNA, BC – Sunshine Farm Carrot Trial Field Day & Seed Farm Tour

Posted by Emily Jubenvill on July 23, 2018

Sunshine Farm Carrot Field Day

Join FarmFolk CityFolk and Young Agrarians for a farm potluck and carrot evaluation field day at Sunshine Farm in Kelowna. At the field day you will have a chance to evaluate 10 varieties of nantes carrots grown side-by-side to see and taste which performed best. You will learn more about why variety trials are important for growing great quality seed and adapting varieties to local conditions, and how you can get involved in a new research network for vegetable variety trial and on-farm plant breeding happening across Canada.

We’ll do a quick tasting and evaluation of a selection of nantes carrots as part of the BC Seed Trials; talk about exciting opportunities for commercial seed production in BC; and get a quick tour of Sunshine Farm before we gather together for a potluck hosted by Young Agrarians.

After the field day and taste testing, tour Sunshine Farm with Jon and Russ to learn more about the seed crops and varieties they are growing, and then enjoy a potluck on the farm.

Join the Facebook Event to let us know you’re coming, and invite your friends!

MORE ABOUT SUNSHINE FARM

Sunshine Farm has been a pioneer in growing organic and heritage seeds. This is their 2nd year as a BC Seed Trials partner, a collaborative research project with the UBC Centre for Sustainable Food Systems, FarmFolk CityFolk and 30+ farmers.  Jon and Russ Alcock have been growing seed for decades and carrot seed is one of their favourites. They will talk a bit about their experience growing carrot and other seed in Kelowna.

Chris Thoreau and Carla Hick from FarmFolk CItyFolk (FFCF) will also be on hand to share some of the latest work in BC seed security. Chris will talk about FFCF’s recent work researching seed contracts; creating seed enterprise budgets, and growing seed with the BC Eco Seed Co-op. Carla, a Red Seal Chef, will share some creative dishes focused around carrots!

FARMFOLK CITYFOLK’S BC SEED SECURITY PROGRAM

FarmFolk CityFolk is a member-based not for profit society cultivating a local, sustainable food system in British Columbia. For over 10 years we have been working closely with vegetable seed growers and seed companies across BC, and are a regional partner for the Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security. We deliver workshops, field days and conduct research with a long-term vision of a thriving ecological seed sector in BC that produces high-quality seed crops at a commercial scale. We believe in collaboration and are working with a wide range of partners from farmers to educational institutions to advance the ecological, economic, and community aspects of seed production.
