FARM JOB: PEMBERTON, BC – Four Beat Farm, Vegetable Farm Worker

Posted by Michalina Hunter on January 03, 2019

Do you enjoy fast-paced, outdoor labour? Want to work hard in the vegetable fields and to have time to pursue other projects and interests? Four Beat Farm is looking for a part-time farm worker for 2019 with opportunities for growth.

ABOUT FOUR BEAT FARM

Four Beat Farm is a certified organic, mixed vegetable operation in the Pemberton Meadows in Lilwat Territory. We operate on 15 acres of leased land close to the town of Pemberton with endless opportunities for hiking, biking, and exploring the mountains. We are entering our fourth season and are looking for motivated, hardworking individuals to grow for our 75+ CSA members in the Sea to Sky and our local farmers market.

We have roughly 3.5 acres in vegetable production with an equal amount in cover crop and the remainder in pasture for our pair of draft horses who provide much of the power in the day-to-day workings of the farm. We employ biodynamic practices and grow primarily summer and fall storage crops using bio-extensive methods that lend themselves well to horse drawn cultivation and our lighter tillage implements along with borrowing heavier equipment when needed.

Pemberton has a short and intense growing season with hot summer days and lots of mud, rain, bugs, and cold in the spring and fall. Farming here requires a real appreciation for good food, being outdoors in all kinds of weather, moving quickly to making the most of the summer months, and celebrating the seasonal nature of farming.

JOB TASKS

As a member of our 2019 farm crew, you will be involved in all aspects of the farm including: planting, seeding, weeding, irrigating, harvesting, washing, and packing over 40 different types of vegetables. You may be asked to help with CSA pick ups and markets, assist with handling horse drawn machinery, and occasionally fill in for weekend chore rotation.

We are a small farm and often take a “divide and conquer” approach so, once trained and comfortable with a task, you will regularly be expected to work by yourself in the field and wash station, as well as alongside the lead farmer and a crew of 1-4 workers and volunteers for bigger projects. If you find it hard to stay upbeat and on-task when working solo then this is not the right place for you.

JOB DETAILS

We expect you to work 3-4 days/week (15-30 hours) from May until the end of October. You must be available on Tuesdays, be willing to start as early as 6am on summer harvest days, and be reliable and stick to a schedule that we will work out together.

This position is intended to have enough flexibility for you to have time to explore the area, find supplementary work, or, if you want to take on a self-directed project at the farm outside of the vegetable field (ie bees, herbs, flowers, etc.) or learn more about horse-powered farming methods outside of your regular work hours, we are open to discussing this possibility.

Compensation: This is a paid position with an hourly wage dependent on experience (starting $14/hour). Access to extra vegetables, the space and support to have a personal project on the farm (bees, flowers, chickens, etc.), an end of season bonus, and opportunities to grow with the farm in future seasons are all possible.

Accommodation: We do not currently have accommodation set up at the farm for employees, but we are open to making this available for the right candidate.
