Winter in northern Alberta, yes, it was cold during our second Peace Country Mixer! Nevertheless we had a fantastic time in Grande Prairie during the weekend March 2 and 3. What a wonderful and diverse crowd we got to spend the days with. There were new farmers, YA apprentices, farmers travelling the country to gather experience on different farms and of course our very supportive farm friends in the Peace Country, that run well established farms and are keen on growing the new generation of young farmers. The Comox Valley New Farmer Loan and Mentorship Program matches up new farmers that require small loans to purchase farming equipment with lenders and mentors who are interested in supporting local agriculture. Loans made to farmers range from $1,000 to a maximum of $5,000. New farmers are required to have a minimum of one year of farming experience. Moschata Landrace Project The Northern Landrace Project is seeking volunteer growers for 2019 to landrace/swarm breed some large, early, cold night tolerant, resilient Curcubita moschata (butternut squash) with the end goal of a loveable butternut flavor.
