Deerfoot farm is located on 56 acres in the beautiful Spallumcheen valley. Besides the usual farm animal suspects (aka border collies), its borders are open to deer, pheasants, marmots and hawks. Like most small scale farms, its land has been used for many different farm ventures over the years. Organic vegetables, free range chickens, grain production, and livestock are examples of the farms diversity. Holding the first Certified Organic farm license in the valley is proof of its owners commitment to sustainable land stewardship. This year David and Shelley have opened their doors to a new farm project, one in which they hope will continue their farm’s traditions. This will provide land and mentoring to a new generation of farmers. Tessa and Aaron will be living and farming on the property for the 2014 season. Together they bring years of agricultural knowledge, a dedication to hard work, and new energy and ideas to the farm and the surrounding community. David and Shelley are the owners of Deerfoot Farm, where they have farmed for the last 23 years. They are integral in the North Okanagan farm community and active members in the Kelowna and Vernon Farmer’s Market. They will continue to grow dryland potatoes for market, as well as vegetables and poultry for their family and friends. As our new arrangement shows, they are forever dedicated to their farm’s future and the future of agriculture in the British Columbia.
After 5 successful years farming in Vancouver, Tessa is returning to the Okanagan to continue her passion for growing food. Aaron is excited to drop his hammer and chisel and begin a new career that more closely represents his values. We are over the moon with the opportunity to move back to a rural lifestyle, to be able to work together and start a business that we both believe is vital to the future. Together, we look forward to joining a new community, to continuing the traditions of Deerfoot Farm and to growing some really good food under the warm Okanagan sun.
